Why This Announcement Caught My Attention
I joined the AAdvantage® program in 1991 and have watched it evolve for more than three decades: from mileage-based elite qualification to Loyalty Points, through expanding partnerships and the growth of co-branded credit cards.
Today I'm a six-year ConciergeKey® traveler, a holder of both the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive Mastercard® and Citi® / AAdvantage® Business Mastercard®, and the creator of LP Calculator and AAWidebody.com. From that vantage point, I look past the benefits themselves to what they reveal about where the program is heading.
The Real Story Behind the Announcement
Most members noticed the TSA PreCheck® / Global Entry credit, the annual inflight credits and the higher flight discount. Those are welcome.
But I believe the most meaningful change is the continued expansion of ways to earn miles on everyday spending. Streaming, rideshare, rail, EV charging, and AAdvantage® Hotels & Cars all keep members engaged with the AAdvantage® ecosystem beyond airline tickets.

Before vs. Now
| What changed | Before | Now |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday earning | Mainly rewarded American Airlines purchases, restaurants and gas stations. | Adds 3X on AAdvantage® Hotels and Cars, 2X on streaming and Rides and Rails, and EV charging. |
| Flight discount | $125 after $20,000 in purchases. | $150 after $20,000 in purchases. |
| Travel benefits | Preferred boarding, first checked bag free, no foreign transaction fees. | Adds Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit, inflight credits, Walmart+, FOX One discount and travel protections. |
| Annual fee | $99 | $150 from January 24, 2027; waived for the first 12 months of a new account. |
What About the Higher Annual Fee?
Both cards move from $99 to $150 on January 24, 2027. Whether that is a good trade depends on how many of the new benefits you would actually use.
The up to $100 in inflight credits and the $98 Walmart+ membership together exceed the $51 increase, but only for members who would use them anyway.
My rule of thumb: count only the benefits you would use without the card. A credit you would never have spent money on is not a saving.
Why This Matters in the Loyalty Points Era
Loyalty Points changed how many members approach elite status. Flying is still central, but members want more ways to earn throughout the year, so the fine print matters.
American's release lists "1 Loyalty Point for every 1 eligible AAdvantage® mile earned from purchases" as an existing Platinum Select® benefit. It announces no new Loyalty Point earning, and Upgraded Points reports the new bonus categories earn no extra Loyalty Points.
What this means: the new categories add miles; Loyalty Points on card purchases are unchanged. Confirm how Loyalty Points apply in Citi's card terms before counting on them for status.
Credits give a fixed value. Bonus categories can pay off every month on spending you already do. That, more than the credits, is the real value here.
What Changes on the Business Card
The Citi® / AAdvantage Business™ Mastercard® refreshes on the same date, with the same $150 fee. New:
- 3X on eligible AAdvantage® Hotels and Cars bookings.
- 2X in a Self-Select Category you choose: U.S. shipping providers, office supply stores or U.S. advertising services.
- Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit, up to $120 every four years.
- Up to $100 a year back on inflight purchases.
- 25% off a Melio subscription for managing business payments.
- Enhanced travel protections.
Earning stays at 2X on American Airlines, car rental, gas stations and telecom, cable and satellite providers. The release also notes 1 Loyalty Point per $1 on business card purchases, plus an extra point per $1 for primary cardmembers on Authorized User spending through December 31, 2028.
What This Means for Different Travelers
Status Seekers
Members pursuing Gold®, Platinum®, Platinum Pro®, Executive Platinum® or Loyalty Point Rewards still earn Loyalty Points on card purchases. The new categories add miles, so they should not change your status plan on their own.
Frequent American Airlines Travelers
You can now tie more of your everyday spending and travel to the AAdvantage® ecosystem.
Occasional Travelers
The new travel benefits and statement credits are likely worth more to you than any Loyalty Point angle. This is the audience American says the card is designed for.
Business Owners
Added earning can complement business expenses. Look closely at the Self-Select Category if your spending is in shipping, office supplies or advertising.
My Personal Assessment
I have a long relationship with American Airlines and take part in the program through several Citi® / AAdvantage® products. I view these changes positively.
Rather than rewarding loyalty only in the air, American and Citi appear to recognize that today's travelers engage through many channels:
- Flights
- Hotels
- Ground transportation
- Digital services
- Everyday purchases
The updated earning structure acknowledges that reality and broadens the ways members can get value from the program.
Beyond the Benefits
My relationship with American Airlines has never been solely about miles, status or benefits.
Over the years I have had the privilege of meeting remarkable flight attendants, pilots, Premium Guest Services representatives, gate agents, airport employees and fellow travelers. As a six-year ConciergeKey® traveler, I have seen firsthand the professionalism, dedication and care of the people who represent the airline.
Benefits and perks are appreciated, but the human element is what I value most.
The miles may have introduced me to American Airlines decades ago.
The people are what kept me coming back.
